The most important story anyone can tell to those who care about them is the story of their life and how what happened to them in it shaped who they became in their time on this planet.
The problem for most people who would like to tell that story is that if they never gave time and effort to getting it down while it was happening to them, by the time they decide to capture and tell it, their recollection may be both faded and its accuracy less than reliable.
And, as special as our life stories may be to us, if it wasn’t documented by you, for most of us, other than the bare facts on a career resume, it was unlikely to have been recorded at any time by anyone else.
And finally, of course, in telling that story, perhaps most people have neither the skills nor a method for turning the story of their lives into something in which others will be interested, or that they may wish to read.
Not everyone has a biographer, and nor does everyone’s story feature on a dedicated Wikipedia page.
But now, the digital age is here now to preserve your story and your legacy.
And, now armed with its tools, I offer to fix that for you, and I have both a method and the skills to do so.
But, first, let’s explore some reasons you may wish to do this.
And, first, let’s be frank: the later you have children in your own life, the less likely it is that either you or your grandchildren will ever come to know each other, or about each other, in any meaningful way, except through such documentation.
Constructing your written biography provides a tangible record of where you came from, the challenges you faced, and the values you upheld in your life to preserve your family’s unique history for future generations to whom it may otherwise be out of sight.
Once it is in words, it can withstand the ages and future changes in technology.
As we age, because memories naturally fade, recording your life story allows you to capture precious memories to ensure they are not lost.
At whatever point you start, documenting your life story helps preserve it for future generations, allowing its legacy to endure.
Within your own family, this can foster a sense of continuity and connection between generations to provide them with a sense of heritage and help them to understand their own identity.
Personal life stories have historical and cultural value, as they can offer insights into specific time periods, societal changes, and cultural contexts.
My method
Of course, the earlier you start, the better, but documenting even the outline of your existence and its main events can be a valuable gift to yourself and future generations, as to those who follow, your life story is a unique and valuable record that can be passed on down to your own immediate descendants and their future generations.
Using my method, you simply don’t have to get everything down now, but can build your story over time, beginning at any point you decide to focus on.
We can then work at whatever speed you determine, and in any order you want to get started, to ensure what is most important to you is what gets passed down most reliably.
About me
As a dedicated personal diarist, I’ve been running my daily database diary for almost 30 years, since, at age 34, I first set foot in my new life in Australia. My diary is thus nearing 30 years in age.
As a consequence, although my wife and I have no children, few people after we have passed on are likely to have any interest in my story.
That doesn’t mean however that I can’t advise others on how to record their story, even if they need someone else to make it into a useful or more readily readable document of record later.
As a former professional sub-editor on the pages of The Australian Financial Review newspaper, as well as on a host of othe professionally produced magazines, in Sydney, I have the skills to perform this work.
Thanks for reading.
